So I picked up 'My Sister''s Keeper' not expecting too much.<br /><br />I was pleasantly surprised. I found this a rewarding, well-written book exploring some of the tough dilemmas modern medicine brings us. Its unusual style of each chapter of the book being written from the first person perspective of a different character helps Picoult build multi-dimensional and believable characters.<br /><br />The story centers around a family, ex-lawyer-now-a-mother Mum, less educated fireman Dad, an delinquent older brother Jed and two daughters Kate and Anna. Kate has leukemia, and Anna was conceived in a test-tube to be a bone marrow match for Kate, but is now a normal member of the family.<br /><br />Anna, although healthy herself, spends a lot of time in hospital to be a donour for Kate, and she takes her mother to court (the ex-lawyer bit conveniently makes for a more compelling story than most court cases) to gain custody of her own medical care. The story revolves around the tension of a family with a court case, deliquent son and sick, teenage daughters.
